Eastern Dragon Tattoo Idea? Try It for 2 Weeks
Eastern Dragon Tattoo Idea? Try It for 2 Weeks
Lasts 10–14 days
An Eastern dragon tattoo stands for wisdom, power, protection and good fortune. Unlike fire-breathing Western dragons, Chinese and Japanese dragons are benevolent, long and wingless, tied to water and the sky. Chinese ones often chase a pearl of wisdom. Coiled in a ring and done in blackwork, this one makes a bold arm or shoulder piece.
At InkToday, this blackwork Eastern dragon is 3.6 x 3.5 in and lasts 10–14 days, big enough to judge a shoulder piece before you sit for the real one.
Size: 3.6 x 3.5 in (9.1 x 8.8 cm) · Best placement: back of the arm, shoulder or thigh

What's in the kit?
Every InkToday tattoo ships in its protective sleeve, with an application guide to help you put it on.
How do I apply my tattoo?
Our tattoos are painless and very easy to apply yourself – it only takes a few simple steps.
Follow the application guide supplied with your tattoo, or watch our video tutorial here.
Once applied, the ink reacts with the proteins and the keratin in your skin, and darkens within 24 to 36 hours.
Your tattoo then stays visible for 10 to 14 days depending on where you apply it on your body, before fading away naturally.
Colour and appearance
Unlike most temporary tattoos, INKTODAY ink bonds to the surface of your skin instead of simply sitting on top of it.
Once applied, the ink reacts with the proteins and the keratin in your skin, and darkens within 24 to 36 hours.
The final result looks like a real tattoo, in a deep blue-black colour.
How long does the tattoo last?
INKTODAY tattoos are designed to fade within 10 to 14 days.
How long they last depends on where you apply them, on your daily activities and on how hydrated your skin is.
The ink fades gradually as your skin renews itself naturally.
Here is an estimate of how long they hold, area by area:
🦵 Leg: day 1 to 5 (very dark colour), then day 6 to 12 (colour fading).
🦶 Foot: day 1 to 8 (very dark colour), then day 9 to 14 (colour fading).

- Love it? Show it to your tattoo artist. Not sure? Try another design next month.
What a coiled dragon tattoo means
In East Asian art the dragon is often linked to strength, wisdom and good fortune. A coiled dragon is commonly read as power held in calm control.
How to apply
- Clean and dry the skin.
- Press the tattoo on firmly.
- Peel off the backing.
- Let it develop: the ink darkens over 24–36 hours.
InkToday makes plant-based semi-permanent tattoos that develop on the skin over 24–36 hours, look like real ink and last 10–14 days, so you can try a tattoo design before getting it for real.
Meaning
In China, the dragon was a mark of rank. In the Yuan dynasty, the two-horned, five-clawed dragon was designated for use by the Son of Heaven or emperor only, while the four-clawed dragon was used by princes and nobles. Many pictures of Chinese dragons also show a flaming pearl under their chin or in their claws.

FAQ
What does an eastern dragon represent?
An Eastern dragon represents wisdom, power, protection and good fortune. In Chinese, Japanese and Korean traditions, it is a benevolent being tied to water, rain and the sky, not a monster to slay. In old China, the five-clawed dragon was the emperor's emblem. As a tattoo, it often marks strength under control and a wish for luck.
What does a Chinese dragon tattoo mean?
A Chinese dragon tattoo stands for power, strength, wisdom, good luck and prosperity. Chinese dragons control water and weather rather than breathing fire. The number of claws carried rank: five for the emperor, four for princes and nobles. A dragon chasing or holding a pearl adds the idea of wisdom and spiritual energy.
What are the different types of dragon tattoos?
The main families are Eastern and Western. Eastern dragons include Chinese dragons, with four or five claws and often a pearl, and Japanese dragons, usually with three claws and linked to water. Western dragons have wings, horns and fire. Then come the styles: traditional, blackwork, fine line, tribal or realism. This one is an Eastern dragon in blackwork.
Is dragon a yin or yang?
In Chinese tradition, the dragon is a yang symbol: the dragon god is seen as the giver of rain and a picture of yang, the masculine power of generation. It is also linked to the sky and to imperial power. That is one reason the dragon is a classic choice for men's tattoos. If balance matters to you, a dragon paired with a softer element tells that story.
Is dragon tattoo good or bad?
In East Asian cultures, a dragon tattoo is a good sign, tied to luck, wisdom and protection. In Western stories, dragons are more often the danger a hero must face, but as a tattoo they still read as strength and courage. Some say a dragon should rise, not fall. In the end, it is one of the most positive classic motifs.
