Our first discoveries were made in South-East Asia in the early 2000s, where one of the InkToday partners was living at the time.
Some men and women there carry on a tattoo art that goes back thousands of years.
Their ink, made only from local plants and roots, gives a deep, intense black that is one of a kind.
We were fascinated by their respect for nature and by the bond between people and their environment.
For them, ink was not just a pigment but a sacred link with the earth.
Our research then led us to study how contemporary inks are made, and what we found strengthened our commitment to a more natural approach.
Most tattoo inks on the market today contain chemical components, such as synthetic pigments and additives, which can be harmful to the skin and the environment.
Although these inks perform well in terms of hold and colour intensity, they raise questions about long-term health and environmental impact.
At InkToday, we chose to move away from these processes and create a plant-based, vegan ink with no PPD and no henna, while still delivering a deep black colour and a long-lasting result.
