Death Moth Tattoo Idea? Try It for 2 Weeks
Lasts 10–14 days
A death moth tattoo shows the death's-head hawkmoth, with its skull-like mark on the thorax. It mostly stands for mortality and transformation: a memento mori that also speaks of rebirth after dark times. Some wear it to remember someone they lost. In bold blackwork, it reads as a strong, clean piece.
At InkToday, this death moth is 3 x 1.8 in and lasts 10–14 days, so you can live with it before you book the real tattoo.
Size: 3 x 1.8 in (7.5 x 4.6 cm) · Best placement: upper back, chest or neck

What's in the kit?
Every InkToday tattoo ships in its protective sleeve, with an application guide to help you put it on.
How do I apply my tattoo?
Our tattoos are painless and very easy to apply yourself – it only takes a few simple steps.
Follow the application guide supplied with your tattoo, or watch our video tutorial here.
Once applied, the ink reacts with the proteins and the keratin in your skin, and darkens within 24 to 36 hours.
Your tattoo then stays visible for 10 to 14 days depending on where you apply it on your body, before fading away naturally.
Colour and appearance
Unlike most temporary tattoos, INKTODAY ink bonds to the surface of your skin instead of simply sitting on top of it.
Once applied, the ink reacts with the proteins and the keratin in your skin, and darkens within 24 to 36 hours.
The final result looks like a real tattoo, in a deep blue-black colour.
How long does the tattoo last?
INKTODAY tattoos are designed to fade within 10 to 14 days.
How long they last depends on where you apply them, on your daily activities and on how hydrated your skin is.
The ink fades gradually as your skin renews itself naturally.
Here is an estimate of how long they hold, area by area:
🦵 Leg: day 1 to 5 (very dark colour), then day 6 to 12 (colour fading).
🦶 Foot: day 1 to 8 (very dark colour), then day 9 to 14 (colour fading).

What a death moth tattoo means
The death's-head moth is often linked to transformation, mystery and the cycle of endings and new beginnings. The moon adds a nod to night and intuition.
How to apply
- Clean and dry the skin.
- Press the tattoo on firmly.
- Peel off the backing.
- Let it develop: the ink darkens over 24–36 hours.
InkToday makes plant-based semi-permanent tattoos that develop on the skin over 24–36 hours, look like real ink and last 10–14 days, so you can try a tattoo design before getting it for real.
Meaning
The death's-head hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos) is best known for the vaguely skull-shaped pattern adorning its thorax, which gave the moth both its common and scientific names. It flies late in the night, so it is seldom seen. It also appears in The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Its skull links it to the memento mori, an artistic symbol that reminds us of the inevitability of death.

FAQ
What does death moth tattoo mean?
A death moth tattoo usually stands for mortality and transformation. The skull-like mark on the moth's thorax works as a memento mori, a reminder that life is short. The moth itself goes through metamorphosis, so it also speaks of rebirth after a hard time. Some people wear it to remember someone they lost. In the end, the meaning is the one you give it.
Are death moth tattoos bad?
No. A death moth tattoo is not a bad sign in itself. The skull can look grim, but most people read it as a reminder to live fully, or as a symbol of getting through dark times. Like any design, what matters is what it means to you and how well it is drawn. If you are unsure, wear a temporary one first and see how it feels.
Is a death moth a bad omen?
In old European folklore, the death's-head hawkmoth was sometimes seen as a bad omen because of the skull on its back. Today, as a tattoo, it is read very differently: it is about facing mortality rather than fearing it, and about change. Many wearers see it as a strong, personal symbol. A superstition from the past does not decide what your tattoo means.
What does a moth tattoo on the neck mean?
A moth on the neck does not change the core meaning: transformation, mystery and a pull toward the light. What the spot adds is visibility. A neck tattoo shows above most collars, so it says you are fine with people seeing it. A wide, symmetrical moth sits well at the base or the side of the neck. Try the spot first if you are not sure.
What is the symbolism of a dead moth?
A dead moth is often read as the end of a cycle and the start of a new one. Since moths are tied to transformation, their death can stand for letting go of an old version of yourself. In tattoo art, the death moth carries a similar idea through the skull on its thorax: life is short, so make the change count. It is a reflective symbol, not a dark curse.
