Spiritual tattoo meanings: what each symbol stands for
A spiritual tattoo does not have to belong to one religion. Most people pick a symbol for protection, growth, connection or inner strength. The meaning that counts is yours, which is why it helps to wear it for a while before making it permanent.
- Eyes: the third eye for intuition, the eye of providence (the all-seeing eye) for protection, the Egyptian eye, the symbol behind most Eye of Horus tattoos, for healing.
- Lotus: rebirth and growth. More designs in our lotus flower tattoo ideas.
- Tree of life: family, roots and connection.
- Lion and mandala: courage, wholeness and balance.
- Unalome tattoo: the winding path to enlightenment, from Buddhist tradition.
- Om tattoo: the sound of the universe in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
- Hamsa tattoo and evil eye tattoo: an open hand or a blue eye charm that keeps bad luck away.
- Chakra tattoo symbols: the body's seven energy centers.
Unalome, Om, hamsa, evil eye and chakra designs are not in our range yet: send yours, a temporary Om tattoo for example, as a custom temporary tattoo and wear it before the real one.

Small spiritual tattoos: placement and size
Small spiritual tattoos are the easiest to start with: a small lotus of 2.9 x 2.9 cm (1.1 x 1.1 in), an Egyptian eye or an eye of providence of 5 x 5 cm (2 x 2 in). They fit the wrist, the ankle, behind the ear or a finger. A lotus temporary tattoo or a tree of life temporary tattoo is a gentle first piece; medium designs suit the forearm, and a sleeve covers the whole arm.
- Small (eye, small lotus): wrist, ankle, behind the ear, fingers.
- Medium (tree of life, mandala lion, geometric lotus): forearm, upper arm, shoulder blade.
- Large (Third Eye Relic): the full arm, see our temporary tattoo sleeves.
On fingers and hands they last 7 to 10 days, elsewhere 10 to 14 days. Application takes about 5 minutes and the color develops over 24 to 36 hours. The ink is plant-based, vegan and free of PPD.
Spiritual tattoos for women and for men
Spiritual tattoos for women are often fine-line and small: a lotus on the wrist, a lotus on a long line down the spine, a tree of life on the forearm. Spiritual tattoos for men lean bigger: the Third Eye Relic sleeve, a mandala lion or an eye of providence on the forearm. Every design works for both.
Bigger pieces for him: see our temporary tattoos for men.
Spiritual tattoos: FAQ
What does a spiritual tattoo symbolize?
A spiritual tattoo stands for what you believe in or what guides you: an eye for protection, a lotus for rebirth, a tree of life for family and roots, a lion for inner strength. It does not have to belong to one religion.
What tattoo represents new beginnings?
Tattoos that represent new beginnings are led by the lotus flower: it rises from the mud and opens in the light, so it stands for rebirth and growth. A small lotus on the wrist or a lotus on a long line are good first pieces.
Do these spiritual tattoos look real?
Yes. The ink darkens over 24 to 36 hours and dries matte, like a healed tattoo, then fades on its own.
How long do spiritual temporary tattoos last?
10 to 14 days on the arm, the back or the ankle, and 7 to 10 days on fingers and hands, then they fade on their own.
Can I try my own spiritual symbol?
Yes. Send a photo or a drawing and we print it as a custom temporary tattoo.
Should I try a spiritual tattoo before getting it inked?
It is the best way to check the size, the spot and whether the symbol still feels right after two weeks. See how to try a tattoo before you get it.
Which tattoo to avoid?
Avoid a sacred symbol you have not looked into. Some designs carry a precise religious meaning, such as the unalome or the Om, and placement matters to many believers: in Buddhist countries, a Buddha image below the waist is widely seen as disrespectful. Wearing it for two weeks first lets you check.
What is the all-seeing eye tattoo?
The all-seeing eye, or eye of providence, is an eye inside a triangle, often with rays of light. It stands for protection and a higher power watching over you. Ours measures 5 x 5 cm (2 x 2 in), a good size for the forearm or the wrist.
